Traditional Swedish meatballs using my great great Grandmother's 125-year old recipe. Serve with lingonberries and mashed potatoes.
Ingredients
1 cup milk1 cup bread crumbs
2 lbs ground round
1 medium onion, grated
1/4 teaspoon allspice
1 teaspoon salt
2 eggs, beaten
6 Tablespoons butter, or as needed
4 Tablespoons flour, or as needed
4 cups beef stock
Preparation
Step 1
Mix milk and bread crumbs in a bowl, then allow to rest 30 minutes

Preheat oven to 325 degrees F

Add allspice, salt, eggs, onion and ground round to bread crumb mixture

Blend well, then allow to rest 30 minutes

Shape into 1-inch meatballs

Heat a Dutch oven or skillet over medium-low heat

Brown meatballs in butter using small batches and place in casserole dish

If necessary, add butter to meat drippings until it’s roughly 4 Tablespoons total fat

Make a roux by adding 4 Tablespoons flour, or more as needed, and brown slightly
Step 10
Gradually add beef stock to the roux and mix thoroughly
Step 11
Heat until gravy just begins to boil, then remove from heat
Step 12
Add salt and pepper to gravy to taste

Pour gravy over meatballs in the casserole dish and bake at 325 degrees F for 1 hour
