A traditional Christmas cocktail in Chile made with brandy and spices

Ingredients

1     liter (4 1/4 cups) whole milk
1/2     cup turbinado or brown sugar
1     large cinnamon stick
2     large orange peels
1     Tablespoon nutmeg
2     whole cloves
2     Tablespoons vanilla extract
1     can (14 oz) condensed milk
2     Tablespoons ground coffee
1     cup brandy such as pisco or cognac (or use aguardiente, rum, whiskey)

Preparation

Step 1
Add milk, brown sugar, cinnamon stick, orange peels, nutmeg, cloves and vanilla extract to a medium sized pot over medium low heat

Step 2
Heat slowly and stir constantly until mixture comes to a simmer

Step 3
Simmer 5 minutes (the aromas of cinnamon, orange peel, nutmeg and cloves will be noticeable)

Step 4
Turn off heat, add condensed milk and whisk

Step 5
Add coffee and whisk

Step 6
Strain liquid into a bowl that is sitting in an ice bath (larger bowl with ice water). This removes the spices, orange peels and coffee

Step 7
Cool liquid completely, stirring occasionally

Step 8
Add alcohol only after the liquid has cooled. Hot liquid will make the drink bitter

Step 9
Place in the refrigerator and chill completely, about 2 hours. Serve cold with pan de Pascua (Easter bread) and fresh fruit, common during Christmas and New Year celebrations
