Yield: 2

Time: 15 minutes

Traditional hot coffee drink native to Turin, Italy, made of espresso, drinking chocolate, and whipped cream served layered in a small glass

Ingredients

1     cup milk
½     cup semisweet or bittersweet chocolate chips, or chopped chocolate pieces
1     double espresso (doppio)
½     cup whipping cream
1     tablespoon powdered sugar
½     teaspoon vanilla extract

Preparation

Step 1
First make the drinking chocolate by heating a small saucepan over medium heat and adding the milk and chocolate chips

Step 2
Whisk mixture until it begins to boil, then boil 1 additional minute, whisking continuously

Step 3
Remove drinking chocolate from heat and pour 1/2 cup into a clear cappuccino glass

Step 4
Brew a double espresso into the cappuccino cup over the back of a spoon to help create a defined layer between the drinking chocolate and the espresso.  This is not necessary, but the result is beautiful.

Step 5
Next make the whipped cream by adding the whipping cream, powdered sugar and vanilla extract to a cold bowl and whisking until stiff peaks form

Step 6
Spoon a large dollop of whipped cream on top of the coffee layer

Step 7
Before drinking, you may want to mix the drinking chocolate and espresso
